What You Should Know About Conventional Diabetes
Treatment
Not all treatments for diabetes are the
same. Here are some of the basic facts that you should know
about your diabetes treatment.
General Facts
Your diabetes treatment will depend on your
type of diabetes and the extent of your disease. Individuals
afflicted with the more common type 2 diabetes may
receive a diabetes treatment recommendation of diet and
exercise and perhaps of weight reduction in overweight
patients. This will work well for patients who have been able
to detect type 2 diabetes at an early stage. For more chronic
conditions of the disease type, medications taken by mouth or
insulin may be recommended.
For individuals with type 1 diabetes, insulin
remains the number one necessary diabetes treatment. Insulin
treatment however may be combined with diet and exercise
recommendations.
The common diabetes treatment components of
diet and exercise can best be addressed by a licensed dietician
or an endocrinologist. The key to the effectiveness of such
treatment components lies in consistently following the
prescribed diet and exercise plan and establishing lifestyle
changes.
Insulin
As mentioned, insulin is on top of the
diabetes treatment list for type 1 diabetics. Since people
with this disease cannot produce their own sufficient
amounts of insulin, they will constantly need an external
insulin supply. Before, the only way to channel insulin
diabetes treatment into the body was through injections
from sterilized syringes. New technology however, has
brought us the insulin pump which is affixed with a
cannula that delivers adjustable and continuous insulin
supply to the body. Insulin pens with disposable
cartridges and needles are also an option. Other new
innovations are the insulin skin patches and inhaled
insulin.
The common problem with insulin diabetes
treatment however is that improper delivery could result in
hypoglycemia which is characterized by very low blood sugar.
Insulin intake could also result in weight gain in some people
which may necessitate having a precise exercise program and
careful monitoring.
Medication
There are many kinds and brands of diabetes
treatment drugs for type 2 diabetes. Not every drug however can
be used by every patient with the disease type. A specific kind
of drug may be recommended by your doctor depending on your
specific needs. It is logical to assume that type 2 diabetes
treatment drugs automatically increase the production of
insulin in the pancreas. Other kinds of medication however help
type 2 diabetics by slowing down the digestion and absorption
of carbohydrates, increasing cell insulin reception and
decreasing glucose released by the liver. The good news about
diabetes medication is that modern technology has made it
possible to manufacture medicines that will not cause weight
gain.
Pancreas Transplant
Since type 1 diabetics suffer from not being
able to produce enough insulin, then it is perhaps possible to
transplant a new pancreas that can produce sufficient amounts
of insulin. Pancreas transplantation however is a new field
that is still being studied. It may be possible though to
transplant an entire pancreas or islet cells that are
responsible for insulin production. Studies are also underway
to discover alternative sources of islet cells including animal
sources.
Of course, surgery always has its risks and
there is always the possibility that a patient’s body could
reject the transplant.
