Diet
Controlled Diabetes
Diet controlled diabetes is a state of
controlling diabetes without the use of medications. A lot of
patients who have diabetes and have recently found out that
they have high levels of blood sugar are managing this type of
diabetes without medications. Although little information is
known regarding the clinical outcomes and effects of such
action, one thing is for sure: managing diabetes through
controlling diet helps in reducing blood sugar levels.
Diabetes mellitus or more commonly known as
diabetes is a condition wherein the body is not producing
enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the beta cells
of the pancreas that is responsible for transforming glucose
into energy. Inability to transform glucose into energy that
can be used by the body results to high blood sugar levels. In
people with diabetes, their body is unable to make use of
insulin and utilize glucose in the process. This may result to
various complications in the body. Manifestations of diabetes
include excessive thirst, hunger, urination and fatigue.
There are three types of
Diabetes:
· Type 1 which is the failure of the body to
produce its own insulin;
· Type 2 that is the failure of the body to utilize insulin to
transform glucose into energy;
· And gestational diabetes or high blood sugar levels in
pregnant women.
All persons who have type 1 diabetes
need to take insulin injections regularly. People who have type
2 diabetes are initially treated through maintaining a healthy
diet, increasing physical activity, losing weight and taking
hypoglycemic or blood sugar lowering medications. Diet
controlled diabetes is applicable to those who have type 2 and
gestational diabetes.
Treatment is centered on the control of
blood sugar levels. Controlling blood sugar levels may
help prevent the diabetes from causing further
complications. There are a lot of ways that a diabetic
person can control his blood sugar levels. Initially, a
doctor may initiate diet control to reduce weight and in
order to regulate nutrition. If diet control is not
effective, then the doctor may turn to the use of
hypoglycemic medications. Hypoglycemic medications act in
the following ways:
· Help the pancreas to produce more insulin
for the body to utilize
· Aid the body to utilize insulin properly
People who do not respond to oral
hypoglycemic medications may take insulin injections.
As always, prevention is still better than
cure. As early as now, watch what you are eating and your
lifestyle.
Here are very effective guidelines in order
to prevent and control diabetes:
· Maintain an ideal weight. Ninety percent
of people who have diabetes are obese. Research shows that a 10
percent reduction in weight can lead to 50 percent reduction in
blood sugar levels.
· Maintain exercise regularly.
· Maintain a balanced diet.
· Check blood sugar levels regularly.
There are many ways that one can prevent and
control diabetes. One of it is the regulation of diet and
lifestyle. A diet-controlled diabetes may not yet be fully
understood but it is certainly one step closer in controlling
diabetes.
